Tractor Advice Solicited
I am purchasing a tract just under 40 acres in North Missouri. Its mostly wooded bluffs with two nice flat fields of rich soil in a series usually in grain production. The fields together cover 7 or 8 acres. Its currently in Clover and grass and has been bailed. The clover is down to probably 30 percent, maybe a bit better in one of the fields. I intend to get a tractor a plow, disc, and 2 row planter, 5 foot brush hog and a cultivator. I would like to plant a couple acres each of corn and soybeans, a few strips of milo and sunflowers. I will not harvest it, except for sweet corn and maybe a few rows of pumpkins. It will be for wildlife and to enhance the hunting. I was thinking of trying to find an old Ford 8n. I'd like to spend less than 3K for the implements and tractor. I am not a mechanic--but can do simple stuff, points, plugs, etc. Just a hobby farm. Lots of farmalls out there but I want a 3 point.

Re: Tractor Advice Solicited
What are you asking? 8N is OK. Just careful where you buy it. Careful of fresh paint!!!
Hate to say it, but I don't care for Deere-dealt with parts on several occasions, the parts don't fit without mods!!! Screw that! The best tractor I deal with in my limited participation is Kubota. Not for $3k, though. Best of luck. |
Re: Tractor Advice Solicited
8N does not have a live PTO.
Best to have live PTO. This means with an 8N when you push the clutch in the PTO stops. Better to have live PTO so that when you are backing up to mow in corners or tight spaces etc the mower would continue to spin/cut. |
Re: Tractor Advice Solicited
The 8N has many flaws. But for the price, ease of maintainence, parts availability and durability there is nothing out there that can beat it.
Negatives besides no live PTO is that the gearing is way too high. Most of the work you do will be in first gear. Watch out for reverse! It's geared for the interstate. They are not very powerful. A single or small two bottom plow is all it will handle and then you better put water in the tires or they will spin. If you use a bushhog get the sprag for the PTO, this will let the bushhog spin when you engage the clutch without being pushed into hazards by the momentum of the blade. http://just8ns.com/ http://home.att.net/~jmsmith45/rep.htm http://www.ford8n.com/f8shop/ |
Re: Tractor Advice Solicited
i'd get something that is diesel due to peak oil & ability to store diesel for long periods; might have trouble w/ $ limits though.

You can convert a gasoline tractor to wood gas, but not a diesel. I've considered picking up an older gas model for that reason. Article: HERE Video of one: |
Re: Tractor Advice Solicited
And you don't get the diesel bug clogging everything up!
